An important component of fitting your ALL of your Parelli Saddles, our shims fit in ENGLISH or WESTERN and CRUISER shaped Parelli Theraflex  and "Smart Pad" pads. These little Felt and/or Foam gizmos are amazing help in making sure your saddle and you are balanced properly!  Felt pairs come half inch or quarter inch thickness.  Foam pair pieces are tapered, which offers the tremendous advantage of no build-up of thickness-pressure on the horse's upper shoulder area while lifting saddle pressure off the shoulders from down lower in the pad pocket.

PLEASE CLICK ON "EDUCATION" at the top of this page to see diagrams that will help you KEEP IT SIMPLE when shimming your saddle pad to enhance your horse's comfort as well as your own.  There are many illustrations and downloadable/printable pdf's to help set you up for success.

ALWAYS install your Therashims ON TOP OF THE AIR BLADDER in your Theraflex pad OR on top of the SMART FOAM INSERTS in your Parelli Saddles Smart Pad...inside the velcro'd pad pockets. It is important to never put the shims underneath the pad pocket air cells/inserts, as they would then be too close to the horse's body without the edge-softening function of the air cells/inserts.

BREAKTHROUGH NOTES: Our extensive, ongoing research of the effectiveness of the use of shims to promote comfort, balance and performance has revealed that most horses' back shapes actually do even better with slightly smaller shims if you use the felt ones.  So, we began cutting down the size of our original ones, and cutting the connecting strap in half so that we could insert the shims lower down in the pad pocket.  The success was so consistent that we decided to manufacture the shims in a slightly smaller size with longer connecting web straps. In case you purchased our felt shims prior to 2011:  To download a PDF copy of our SHIM SIZE COMPARISON template (so that you can trim down the size of your shims if your horse needs smaller ones set down low in the pad pocket), click this link.

We remain excited to share news of some wonderful shims that we tested for more than two years before introducing them to the market in 2011. We craft them in Germany utilizing the therapeutic closed-cell foam that we install in our western saddle seats. They are molded to have a thick section (a generous 5/8") tapering to a very thin edge which makes them versatile for a number of situations. Especially in cases where we want to lift the saddle a bit, but keep any thickness/pressure away from the shoulder area, these have proven to be quite useful. They are priced per pair at the same rate as our TheraFelt shims, and can be used in combination with them.

Images available when you c;ick on "Education/Downloads" can be printed to help guide you as you assess your horse's back shape and custom-fit needs.  We have discovered that the use of TheraFoam shims instead of numerous felt shims provides many benefits. In addition, we have come to realize that a much more simplified approach to utilization of the TheraFelt shims produces better results over all.  In other words: we believe that no more than 3 sets of shims should generally be required...and quite often, only one set is needed to lift pressure off the shoulder and promote unrestricted movement under Parelli saddles.  If your horse has a sagging center section, it's often a good idea to tuck in a center shim to provide good connection between the horse's body and the saddle/pad/rider.   If you have a horse that you think needs extra shims to help provide shoulder clearance or better balance point access for you when mounted, please contact us for recommendations.

There is a great deal of information about the concept of shimming/custom fitting basic horse's back types on our Saddle DVD, which is viewable on this website...or we'll mail a complimentary one to you if you'll please pay the postage. Note:  Linda does not mention Foam shims in her commentary, as we had not invented them at the time of filming this revolutionary material.  Please don't miss taking advantage of all the research and successful experimentation that has gone into all of this for you.
Also, the video footage of horse's backs in motion on our complimentary DVD is remarkably effective in helping us understand why it is so necessary to accommodate that movement if a horse is to be comfortable performing under saddle.  Click on "THE BACK IN MOTION"...it's fascinating!!
